EC to discuss election expenditure taking note of NC leader Koirala’s statement

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has taken note of the statement made by former General Secretary of the Nepali Congress (NC) Shashank Koirala that he had spent Rs 60 million in the last election.

Stating that the ruling party leader’s statement was ‘sensitive’ in the run-up to the election, the EC has called a meeting of officials to discuss the matter.

“NC leader Shashank Koirala’s statement that Rs 60 million was spent in the last (House of Representatives) election is very sensitive,” said an EC source.

“We fix the ceiling for expenditure during elections but when top leaders of the parties reveal that kind (Rs 60 million) of election expenditure, we have to be sensitive about it. Therefore, we are holding discussions centered on the issue.”

Incidents of violation of poll code are being reported from some districts within two days of the issuance of the election code of conduct.

The EC is planning for investigations and actions after realizing that violation of poll code could become difficult as election nears if incidents of violation start from the very beginning.

Complaints of poll code violations have been lodged against the government and those in various positions. EC sources said that discussions would be held in this regard as well.
