Govt set to present MCC in Parliament notwithstanding differences

KATHMANDU: The government is all set to table the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact in the House of Representatives.

According to a source, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has instructed Law Minister Dilendra Badu and Communications Minister Gyanendra Bahadur Karki to make a proposal on behalf of the government at the Business Advisory Committee meeting scheduled for 11 am tomorrow.

Prime Minister Deuba is still endeavoring to forge consensus among the political parties, including the ruling partners on MCC.

“It is the responsibility of the Prime Minister to maintain international credibility of Nepal,” a source close to the Prime Minister told Khabarhub.

According to the source, the Parliament should decide on the grant that it requested.

The source added that Prime Minister Deuba has instructed the Law Minister to make MCC a business in the parliament even if there is no political consensus so as not to lose the credibility of the government.

The Prime Minister has also assigned his party leaders and ministers to make efforts for reaching an all-party consensus.

“Prime Minister Deuba’s intention was to table a joint proposal along with the ruling partners and CPN-UML, the source added.

According to a minister close to the Prime Minister, Prime Minister Deuba is of the view that the government should not stop the opposition party UML from holding discussions on MCC in the parliament.

“Dilly-dallying the issue further will lead to unfortunate circumatsnces, mainly the government will lose its credibility and its relationship with the United States, too, will be hampered,” the minister said.
