NC holds UML accountable for delaying proceedings in CJ Rana’s impeachment

KATHMANDU: The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has held the main opposition CPN-UML responsible for the delay in moving forward the impeachment against Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana.

Taking part in the discussion on impeachment in the House of Representatives on Sunday, UML lawmakers asked the ruling party as to why it had not moved forward the motion on time and waited for the past 6 months for the same.

In response, NC Parliamentary Party whip Min Biswakarma turned the question to the UML.

He said, “Yes, there was a delay. The reason for delay was: the parliament faced obstruction for the past nine months.” He claimed that the impeachment motion had moved forward at an opportune time.

“A recommendation committee was formed. Once again, the recommendation committee will discuss the motion.” He added that the impeachment should be passed against Chief Justice Rana who stands atop the pile of ill-practices and misappropriation in the judiciary.

The NC lawmaker urged the UML to remember that when the movement against CJ Rana began in the Supreme Court last year, all the parties stood together.

Lawmaker Bishwakarma said lawyers, judges and ex-judges as well as lawmakers protested the Chief Justice’s failure to maintain proper conduct of his post and questioned controversial decisions taken by him.

Reminding that at the time when the movement against Rana was initiated a year and a half ago, those who reached the court in search of justice had to return empty handed, the NC lawmaker said, “Those who went to seek justice used to return from the gate of the Supreme Court. At that time, all of us were all in one place. Then we were in the opposition and now we are in government. Therefore, this impeachment motion is everyone’s motion.”

NC lawmaker Dila Sangraula also said that the impeachment motion against the Chief Justice should be passed as Rana had the audacity to destabilize the Supreme Court by not resigning when calls for the same were getting louder and louder from all sides.
