Nepali national brutally attacked from behind while grabbing food in Oakland

CALIFORNIA: A Nepali living in Oakland was brutally attacked, robbed and left unconscious while grabbing food after work in California, US media reports said.

Sagar Tamang, 25, said he was attacked from behind as he grabbed a hot dog from a street vendor at night outside the Fox Theater, newsnetdaily has said.

Tamang was struck in the back of the head and lost consciousness. He was taken to the emergency department of Highland Hospital, where he was treated for level one trauma, it said.

He woke up the next day with a battered and swollen face from the assault, according to the report.

According to him, he was left in an alley with most of his belongings missing, including his phone, wallet, boots, pants and coat.

Tamang will not be able to return to work as rideshare driver next month.

Meanwhile, Bimala Thapa, Tamang’s girlfriend, created a GoFundMe page to help him cover his medical expenses.

With a goal of $30,000, the fundraiser has received nearly $13,000 in donations to date.

“These hate crimes must stop”, Thapa wrote. “Our hearts go out to everyone who has been affected, injured and killed by this wave of hate crimes against the Asian community. We are from Nepal and longtime residents of San Francisco who recently moved to East Bay. We have the right to feel safe where we live without constant fear.We will use the funds for medical expenses, neurological surgery, trauma therapy and lost wages from his job.

No arrests have been made so far.
