KATHMANDU: The main opposition party CPN-UML has drawn the attention of the Election Commission (EC) towards several provisions in the recently issued election code of conduct.

A UML delegation led by General Secretary Shankar Pokharel reached the EC Thursday and handed over a six-point memorandum to this effect.

In the memo submitted, the UML has objected to the provision barring local level members, ministers and the Prime Minister’s involvement in the election publicity campaign.

Several smaller parties, including the UML, have been raising questions on provisions in the EC-prepared poll code. When the EC had summoned the parties to discuss the local election code of conduct on April 4, the smaller parties created a ruckus about multiple provisions of the poll code and the UML returned without conforming to it.

The UML also disagreed with the provision that mandates the people’s representatives aspiring to be a candidates again to resign from the posts in order to re-file candidacy.

Similarly, the UML also expressed disagreement over the provision that polling officer’s decision regarding validity of ballots could not be questioned.
