MEC proceeds action against Nobel Medical College

KATHMANDU: The Medical Education Commission (MEC) has proceeded towards action against Biratnagar-based Nobel Medical College.

The college has been accused of charging its MBBS students additional fees and troubling them under various pretexts.

Monday’s meeting of the Education and Health Committee under the House of Representatives (HoR) took a decision to this effect.

MBBS quotas for the college would be decreased or scrapped and its affiliation annulled, said MEC Vice Chairperson Dr Shree Krishna Giri. “We had been asking the college not to charge its students extra fees. But it did not heed to this. So we proceeded the punishment process,” he said, adding that a MEC board meeting on coming March 18 would decide on whether or not the college would face action.

On the occasion, HoR’s Education and Health Committee Chairperson Jayapuri Gharti said that there were difficulties in controlling medical colleges from charging their MBBS students additional fees due to various reasons.

She stressed the need for creating an environment conducive for students to pursue their education by sorting out the problem through coordination among the Commission, the college and the local district administration.
