KATHMANDU: Dr. Purna Loksom has been appointed as the vice-chairman of the Planning Commission of Province 1.

A cabinet meeting of Province 1 held on Monday night decided to appoint Dr. Loksam to the post.

Similarly, the cabinet meeting decided to appoint Gyanendra Bahadur Karki of Sankhuwasabha, Narayan Koirala of Sunsari, Prakash Rai of Bhojpur, and Anju Khadka of Morang as the members of the Commission, informed Minister for Transport and Communications Upendra Prasad Ghimire.

When asked about the short-and-long-term plans for the economic prosperity of Province 1, following his appointment, Dr. Loksom said he is currently focused on the upcoming budget of the province in consultation with the representatives.

“The country is preparing a budget for the fiscal year 2022-23. I am suggesting the provincial government prepare the budget based on the priority to increase the GDP and bring a positive impact on the socio-economic development of the province. The budget should not be disbursed randomly.”

He further shared that the government has to make optimum utilization of the available resources and allocate budget on a priority basis only after conducting a micro-analysis.

Originally from Panchthar, Dr. Loksom underlined the need to research how to increase revenue for the prosperity of the province. “The government has to reduce imports and increase exports by marketing the outstanding products of the province,” said he.

Meanwhile, Loksom warned that the country is soon facing an economic debacle if the government does not immediately take the necessary steps to prevent it from sliding into an economic crisis.

Doctoral Degree holder in Econometrics from the University of London, UK, Loksom had been a member of the Planning Commission during the tenure of Sherdhan Rai as the Chief Minister of Province 1.
