KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli has proposed naming Province 1 as Koshi Province.
Speaking at the first convention of Press Chautari Province 1 chapter in Birtamod, Jhapa, on Saturday, Oli for the first time made public the main opposition’s view on naming Province 1.
Emphasizing that Koshi civilization was shared identity of all, he said that Province 1 should be named Koshi Province “There is no other shared identity such as Koshi civilization, and hence, Province 1 should be named Koshi ,” he said.
UML Chair Oli’s proposal came at a time when the political parties in Province 1 are struggling to reach a consensus on naming the province.
The ruling coalition in Province 1 needs the UML to have two-thirds majority. In this context, Oli’s proposal is viewed with significance.
Jhapa is the UML chair’s home district.
