Security guard arrested for “misbehaving” with sitting Minister

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested a security guard deployed at VFS Global for “misbehaving” with a sitting Minister when the latter visited the facility in personal capacity.

VFS Global is an exclusive service provider for the Government of Canada, authorized to provide administrative support services to visa applicants in Nepal.

The arrested has been identified as Sher Jung Gurung, who works as a security guard at Garuda Security Services and was deployed at VFS Global office at Chhaya Center in Thamel, Kathmandu, on Friday when the incident took place.

Police Circle Durbar Marg, Kathmandu, arrested Gurung from VSF Global office after Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Jeevan Ram Shrestha returned from the facility on Friday.

Durbar Marg Police Circle Chief DSP Kopila Chudal said that they are investigating the case after receiving a complaint of misbehavior with a minister.

Minister Shrestha clarified that he had not given any instructions to anyone to arrest the security guard despite “the security guards inappropriate behavior towards Minister Shrestha, who was standing in queue along with his spouse, to collect visas.”

A dispute rose after the security guard had ordered the Minister and his spouse, too, to maintain the queue.

Sources said police, in the past too, received complaints about ill treatment of service seekers by security guards deployed at VFS Global.

The security guard was arrested after security personnel accompanying Minister Shrestha had informed the Home Ministry about the ill treatment by the security guard to the Minister after the Minister had returned to his Tourism Ministry.

“He [Shrestha] is the sitting minister of the country who was with government security personnel. The minister’s bodyguard had also made repeated requests but since the security guard resorted to misbehaving, the Tourism Ministry sent a complaint to the Home Ministry which was forwarded to our office through the police headquarters following which we arrested the security guard and the process of legal action has been initiated,” said Chudal.

The police have filed a case against Gurung under Clause 118 of the National Penal Code.
