NIC calls for effective implementation of RTI law

KATHMANDU: The National Information Commission (NIC) has urged the public agencies to effectively implement the constitutionally-guaranteed Right to Information (RTI).

Noting that most of the public agencies monitored in the Province 1 and Madhes Province of late were found not designating Public Information Officers and not adhering to their responsibility to proactively disclose information, NIC called for the authorities to fully and effectively implement the citizen’s right to information.

After carrying out monitoring of the adherence and enforcement of legal provisions of RT, NIC has drawn a conclusion that the public agencies at province, district and local levels were pathetic to bring the RTI laws to effect.

Information Commissioner and Spokesperson of the NIC, Kamala Oli Thapa pointed out the need for the federal, provincial and local governments to put in place proactive measures to enforce RTI provisions.

In order to protect, preserve and adopt RTI as per the Right to Information provision stipulated in the Constitution and RTI Act, 2007, the NIC was established.

Thapa further said that the NIC has been issuing orders in the name of public agencies to mandatorily allocate programs and budgets for RTI promotion so as to make the public authorities further transparent, accountable and responsible.
