Folk culture bears stories of plights, history and tradition: PM



KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said the religious and cultural songs, hymns and deuda dances performed as part of the celebration of Gaura festival constitute Nepal’s invaluable folk culture.

Giving a message of best wishes on the occasion of the Gaura festival today, PM Deuba wished peace, prosperity and happiness to Nepali sisters and brothers living in the country and abroad.

The folk culture bears the stories of plights, history and tradition, he reminded, adding that it is the national responsibility to protect and promote folk culture.

The Gaura festival is celebrated with fanfare especially in the Sudur Paschim and Karnali provinces of Nepal.

Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri are worshipped by devotees and women who observe fasting.

They reach the Guaraghar and offer akchheta and prasad to biruda. Deuda song and dance performed in local language and gait; and dhamari and dhusko games played during the festival are quite entertaining activities, PM Deuba reminded.

It is believed that worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri in the Gaura festival appease the family deities.

PM Deuba said this festival helps to promote love, faith and harmony in the family and society.

PM Deuba also stressed the need for recognizing the Gaura festival as the national festival by making huge publicity on its cultural and religious value.
