KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba pledged to provide additional land for the development of physical infrastructures in the Shanker Dev Campus in Kathmandu.
Inaugurating a newly built building of the Campus in place of the quake-ravaged building today, PM Deuba said that he will consult the Social Welfare Council and Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizen regarding the same.
The Campus is considered the best one among the campuses in the Tribhuvan University (TU) for management studies.
Furthermore, Deuba urged all the concerned ones not to have political biasness towards the Tribhuvan University. “Padlocking does not resolve the issue. Problems in the Tribhuvan University should be resolved through talks.”
Pressing for quality education for producing capable human resources, the PM assured of government’s support for building infrastructures enabling production of capable human resources.
He expressed his confidence that the newly inaugurated building would withstand the pressure of the students in the Campus and extended his gratitude towards the alumni of the Campus for their support in reconstruction of quake-damaged building.
According to him, the human resources graduating from the Campus were contributing in the commerce and industries sector as well as political.
Similarly, Minister for Education, Science and Technology Devendra Paudel viewed that Shanker Dev Campus had helped save face in the higher education sector.
He shared that campus chiefs, TU and Ministry’s officials recently discussed in the Ministry to enhance quality of education in the TU and assured that they will be effortful towards improving the quality of education in the oldest university in the country and its affiliated colleges.
“A trend of going abroad for higher education after grade 12 has increased. The students going to study in top universities of the world should not be stopped. But the increasing trend of going abroad to study the subjects available in the country has a message that there is some problem in our education quality. An environment should be created to bring in students from India, Bangladesh and China as well as other countries at top colleges like Shanker Dev,” he opined.
Saying there was a problem to expand physical infrastructures as Shanker Dev Campus since earlier, Minister Poudel shared that the Ministry would forward process to provide land of Social Welfare Council.
The Education Minister expressed commitment that the Ministry would support in infrastructure development as the constitution has mentioned education, health and employment as the fundamental rights and stressed to resolve the problems of university through talks.
Similarly, Campus Chief Prof Dr Keshav Raj Joshi shared that there is a lack of space in the college as 30 folds more students come to Shanker Dev Campus to study. There are now 10,000 students in the Campus.
President of the Nepal Students Union and former student of the campus, Dozang Sherpa, was of the view that the bodies concerned should pay attention on physical infrastructure development of the campus.
Former President of Shanker Dev Campus Free Students Union, Shuva Ram Basnet, demanded to establish the campus as the university. He also asked to initiate process to bring eight ropanis of land of the Social Welfare Council in the name of the campus in order to construct more buildings.
Chairperson of Campus Alumni Association, Rajeev Thapa, expressed commitment to provide continuous support in physical and educational development of the campus.
