Maoist Center’s 8th general convention concludes

236-member Central Committee declared

KATHMANDU: The 8th General Convention of the Maoist Center has concluded after running for eight days and electing new leadership of the party.

The closed session of the general convention today finalized 236 members to the Central Committee, marking the end of the convention that started last Sunday with the declaration of the new Central body.

The general convention also passed the ideological and political report tabled by Maoist Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and approved a proposed statute of the party that was tabled by leader Dev Gurung.

Now the newly declared 236-member Central Committee will give shape to the party’s Politburo, Standing Committee and office-bearers. The Maoists have agreed to have 15 office-bearers, including Chairman.

Moreover, 66 more Central Committee members will also be finalized by the newly declared Central Committee.

The proposed statute of the Maoist Center mandated a mixed electoral system to elect the new leadership. Accordingly, 154 Central Committee members were chosen under the proportional electoral system through consensus.

The party avoided holding elections even in the open category and finalized 111 out of 145 Central members today.

Fifteen percent of the Central Committee members are to be nominated by the Central Committee.

A total of 299 members will give full shape to the Maoist Central Committee.
