NC row: PR closed list dispute takes new shape

KATHMANDU: The ongoing dispute within the Nepali Congress (NC) regarding the list of Proportional Representation (PR) submitted to the Election Commission (EC) for the November 20 elections has taken a new shape.

Party leader Shekhar Koirala’s camp has been alleging the party leadership for ignoring its voice.

Discussions have continued between the leadership and the disgruntled faction side to address the problem.

Meanwhile, the dissident side is worried after party President Sher Bahadur Deuba, also the Prime Minister indicated that the names of the central members that he has recommended will not be removed from the closed list.

Party President Deuba said this would imply to the dissenting camp only.

However, the Koirala-led camp has demanded that the rules should be applied equally to both sides.

Deuba denied removing some of the names from the closed list after the Koirala camp demanded that the names of Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba and Manju Khand be removed from the list of Proportional Representation (PR).

While Dr. Arzu is the spouse of Prime Minister and party President Deuba, Manju is the spouse of Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand.

The Dr. Shekhar Koirala camp, which has been protesting against the distribution of tickets, has proposed that both husband and wife should not be nominated as candidates in the election.

The disgruntled faction has demanded that the closed list be revised.

The leaders of both sides engaged in discussions at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Thursday after the party leadership expressed its willingness to revise the closed list.

However, the Koirala faction has demanded that two leaders from the same house should not be nominated at any cost.
