Cooperation among three layers of govt essential to minimize disaster risk: CM Raut

KATHMANDU: Chief Minister of Madhes Province Lalbabu Raut has said cooperation and coordination among three tiers of government are essential to minimize the loss of lives and property in a disaster.

At a province-level mock drill for disaster preparedness organized on the bank of Kamala River located at the border of Dhanusha and Siraha districts on Friday, CM Raut stressed the need for all governments to work in unison. The mock drill was organized by the Province Ministry of Home Affairs and Communications.

He further said the Madhesh districts are in high risk of disaster due to over-exploitation of Chure region and river beds. “Huge loss of lives and property is recorded every year due to monsoon-triggered floods and landslides, so collective efforts are warranted,” he CM Raut underscored.

He also informed that the Province government would establish a separate mechanism for disaster preparedness. It will work for the prevention and reduction of disaster risks, he vowed.

The teams of security persons including Nepal Army, Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force participated in the mock drill on monsoon-caused disaster preparedness.

How the disaster victims could be rescued was conducted in the drill. Shifting victims to safer locations, providing first aid, ensuring self safety and others were practiced on the occasion.

The event was also attended by the ministers, chief district officers, chiefs of municipalities, political representatives and media persons. (RSS)
