Topi Diwas being observed today

KATHMANDU: The International Nepali Topi Day, which coincides with the New Year as per the Gregorian calendar, is being observed across the country today.

The Jagaruk Yuva Abhiyan Nepal is leading a campaign to mark this day on January 1 for the last nine years, said Ghanshyam Shrestha, coordinator of the campaign.

According to Gyan Mani Nepal, secretary of the organization, after the government led by the then Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai formally removed the Nepali national dress in 2068 BS, they started celebrating Topi Diwas to put pressure on the government to return it with dignity.

However, due to the risk of COVID-19, there will be no public events like morning process on the occasion of the day this year.
