Prachanda hopeful of SC reconsidering its verdict to nullify NCP

KATHMANDU: Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center) Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” has expressed his optimism that the Supreme Court (SC) would reconsider its previous decision to nullify the unity of CPN-UML and the Maoist Center.

Speaking to journalists after filing a petition in the SC on Tuesday seeking a review of the March 7 verdict, Prachanda expressed the hope that the verdict would be reviewed.

“The SC had given its verdict on the issue which was not even raised. The SC cannot break the unity of political parties. There are instances that such verdicts have been reviewed,” he said.

Maoist leaders including Haribol Gajurel, Barshaman Pun, Giriraj Mani Pokhrel and Janardhan Sharma had reached the SC at 11 am on Tuesday.

The party had on March 23 decided to go to the SC seeking a review of its decision to nullify the NCP.

A Standing Committee meeting held at Singha Durbar last Tuesday had decided to seek review of the Supreme Court’s decision.

The apex court had restored the erstwhile CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center), scrapping their unification as the NCP on March 7.

Terming the SC’s decision a political one, Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” had said that he would go for a review of the court’s decision.

Earlier, the Maoist Center party had consulted with the legal experts, including Shambhu Thapa, Ram Narayan Bidari, Chandeshwar Shrestha, Mukti Pradhan and others.

There is a legal provision to seek review within 60 days of the court’s decision.

The CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) had unified to become NCP on May 17, 2018.
