KATHMANDU: Speaker of the House of Representatives, Agni Prasad Sapkota, said that the Non-Aligned Movement ( NAM) was relevant as of now as a threat for world peace, interference in the internal affairs, inequality, and inappropriate behaviors continued to in the world.
Addressing Inter-Parliamentary Union’s 143rd Assembly kicked off in Madrid, Spain on Sunday, Speaker Sapkota spoke of the need to keep up with the principles of the United Nations’ charter. Sapkota underscored the importance of NAM for the protection of sovereignty and regional integrity of any country in the world.
The Speaker said, “The developing countries in the world have been consistently deprived of equality in socio-economic and political sectors. Until these challenges remain, the NAM-member countries should raise voice for peace, justice, and development.”
He also expressed his confidence that the parliamentary solidarity and constructive exchange of ideas and would further strengthen the ideals and principles upheld by the NAM.
“Non-alignment is the basis for Nepal’s foreign policy. The principle of co-existence and Panchashil (five principles of peaceful co-existence) are based on the teaching of Nepal’s Lord Buddha. The federal parliament has been the protector of the democratic values and principle.”
According to him, the parliament of Nepal was committed to enhancing cooperation and understanding and to addressing the glaring issues facing our world. He argued that although democracy has been the most preferred form of rule, it is not far from challenges.
The Nepali delegations led by Speaker Sapkota will return home on December 2.
