World Stroke Day: 13 million suffer stroke globally each year

KATHMANDU: October 29 every year is observed as the World Stroke Day and the Dhapasi-based Grande International Hospital organized a program here on Friday to mark the occasion and raise public awareness on it.

According to neurologist Dr Raju Poudel, the data shows that 13 million people suffer a stroke globally each year and one-third of them die untimely.

Poudel shared, one in every four persons and one in each six second have the chances of a stroke.

Least developed countries and developing countries report the higher rates of a stroke and at this backdrop, Nepal needs to be more serious for its prevention and availability of accessible and timely medical intervention.

In the context of Nepal, 10 percent of the sufferers die. High blood pressure, diabetes, obesities, passive lifestyle, imbalanced diet and change in heartbeats are high risk factors for a stroke.

Loss of physical balance, trouble in speaking, sudden loss of eyesight, sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body are among the symptoms of a stroke and its treatment is possible only within four and half hours of the occurrence of any of its symptoms.

Blood clot is the consequence of a stroke and it can be managed through medicines.

Besides, a stroke patient needs physiotherapy, according to Dr Poudel. A public awareness rally was organised from Maharajgunj to Samakhusi Chowk today on the occasion of the Day.

It was attended by Grande International’s medical and non-medical staff, and representatives from the National Neuro Center and Nepal Stroke Association.
