13 years on, construction of National Martyrs Memorial still incomplete



KATHMANDU: The Martyrs Day is being observed by organizing various programs in commemoration of the martyrs who sacrificed their precious lives for the establishment of democracy in the country on Friday.

A weeklong Martyrs Day is being observed from January 23 until today.  Initiated by then Kathmandu municipality, Nepal has been observing the Martyrs Day on Magh 16 since 2012 BS.

Despotic Rana regime had given capital punishment to freedom fighters Shukra Raj Shastri at Pachali in Teku on Magh 10, Dharma Bhakta Mathema at Siphal on Magh 13 and Ganga Lal Shrestha and Dashrath Chand at Shobha Bhagawati on Magh 15 in 1997 BS.

A Prabhat Pheri (early morning rounds) rally is taking place from Ratna Park (Shanti Batika) to Sahid Smarak, Lainchaur.  Prime Minister, ministers, high ranking government officials, people’s representatives, security officials will participate in the rally from Ratna Park and to Lainchaur where they will offer tributes to martyrs today.

Despite various programs being organized in memory of martyrs, the construction of National Martyrs Memorial which started 13 years ago has not yet been completed.

The construction of National Martyrs Memorial is still underway at Gokaneshwor in line with the cabinet decision of May 25, 2007.

To the misfortune of the martyrs in Nepal, it has not yet been completed.  Even though the deadline for the completion was June 8, 2020, only 70 percent of the construction work has been completed due to various reasons including coronavirus pandemic, said project Chief Macha Kaji Maharjan.
