Assigned benches on hold as SC Justices engage in internal meeting

KATHMANDU: Justices of the Supreme Court, who have been upping the ante against Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana, are holding an international meeting to chalk out a future strategy.

The SC Justices attending the meeting are Deepak Kumar Karki, Meera Khadka, Harikrishna Karki, Vishwambhar Shrestha, Dr. Anand Mohan Bhattarai, Prakash Man Singh Raut, Bamkumar Shrestha, Tanka Bahadur Moktan, Prakash Kumar Dhungana, Sushmalata Mathema, Kumar Regmi, Hari Prasad Phuyal, Manoj Kumar Sharma, and Kumar Chudal.

Justices Anil Kumar Sinha, Sapana Malla Pradhan, Ishwar Khatiwada, Nahaku Subedi who are not attending the meeting have expressed their solidarity in writing with the majority of SC Justices. Likewise, Judges Ishwar Khatiwada and Tej Bahadur KC, who are also on leave, also agreed with the majority’s collective decision.

SC Justices on Tuesday met with Chief Justice Rana and urged him to step down on moral ground. They have been sticking to their stance that they will not attend benches unless Chief Justice Rana resigns.

There are 20 judges in the Supreme Court and all the judges, except the Chief Justice himself, are unanimous about the demand that Chief Justice Rana should resign.

No case has been heard in the Supreme Court after all the judges boycotted the benches after CJ Rana took a stand of not resigning.

Similarly, four former Chief Justices, Nepal Bar Association and all the other legal practitioners in a press statement have urged incumbent Chief Justice to resign to give an outlet to the current judicial crisis.

Despite the collective disobedience by the SC Justices, Chief Justice has assigned 11 benches for today.
