PM Oli dismisses rumors about Resham Chaudhary’s release

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Oli has clarified that the government was not carrying out any preparation to release Resham Chaudhary, the lawmaker who is in Dillibazar Prison.

PM Oli, while talking to an online news portal Saturday, clarified that the judiciary had convicted Chaudhary and the government would not intervene in the decision of the judiciary. He cleared that freeing Chaudhary was not a political decision the government could make.

He also charged that CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal was the one who had publicly said he would free Chaudhary.

Resham Chaudhary was elected to the Parliament from now-dissolved Rashtriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN) from Kailali Constituency-1. He had registered his candidacy via proxy and was elected by an overwhelming majority. JSP Chairman Mahantha Thakur was the founder of RJPN, which later merged with Upendra Yadav-led Samajbadi Party to form the existing JSP on April 23, 2020.

On March 7, 2019, Chaudhary was convicted and sent to prison for his role in the Tikapur incident that saw death of seven police officers, among others. Several organisations and communities, including Tharu, have called his conviction a miscarriage of justice and political persecution.
