15 SC Justices meeting even today; not to attend bench unless CJ resigns

KATHMANDU: Supreme Court Justices, who have been staging protests demanding resignation of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana, are holding a meeting even today.

Concluding that Chief Justice Rana is the sole cause behind the existing crisis facing the judiciary, 15 Justices are holding a meeting at 11 am.

They have also been boycotting the benches saying that they would not attend the benches unless Chief Justice steps down.
The meeting of the 15 SC judges held on Tuesday discussed future course of strategy after Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana said he would not resign.

The SC Justices attending the meeting yesterday were Deepak Kumar Karki, Meera Khadka, Harikrishna Karki, Vishwambhar Shrestha, Dr. Anand Mohan Bhattarai, Prakash Man Singh Raut, Bamkumar Shrestha, Tanka Bahadur Moktan, Prakash Kumar Dhungana, Sushmalata Mathema, Kumar Regmi, Hari Prasad Phuyal, Manoj Kumar Sharma, Kumar Chudal and Nahkul Subedi.

The Justices also met with CJ Rana Tuesday morning and urged him to step down to ease the tension the judiciary has been facing lately. However, after CJ Rana said he would not resign, the Justices have been holding back-to-back discussions.

Judges Anil Kumar Sinha and Sapna Malla Pradhan, who are on leave, have expressed their solidarity, in writing, with the majority of SC judges. They will also not be sitting in benches on Wednesday after they arrive in the court. Likewise, Judges Ishwar Khatiwada and Tej Bahadur KC, who are also on leave, also agreed with the majority’s collective decision.

There are 20 judges in the Supreme Court and all the judges, except the Chief Justice himself, are unanimous about the demand that Chief Justice Rana should resign.

No case has been heard in the Supreme Court after all the judges boycotted the benches after CJ Rana took a stand of not resigning.
