Bird flu detected in Kathmandu again

KATHMANDU: Bird flu has been detected in Kathmandu.

According to the Department of Livestock Services, bird flu has been confirmed in two places in Kirtipur of Kathmandu and Chandragiri.

After confirming the bird flu infection at two points in Kirtipur and one place in Chandragiri on Monday, a team has been deployed to destroy the birds in the area, Chandra Dhakal, information officer at the department said.

Initially, technicians have been deployed since Wednesday morning to destroy about 800 turkeys and disinfect the area, said Dhakal.

Following the report of the unnatural death of a turkey, the department collected samples and tested bird flu in a real-time PCR method at a central laboratory.

“We are now working to prevent further spread of the infection,” he said. According to the department, the infection was found in a turkey reared by a farmer for commercial purposes.

The department has stated that it is preparing to make the details public by Wednesday evening after the birds are destroyed and disinfected.

A few months ago, bird flu was found in local chickens and turkeys in Tarkeshwor of Kathmandu, Nakhu of Lalitpur, and other areas.
