Attorney General Badal addresses concerns on citizenship ordinance



KATHMANDU: Attorney General Ramesh Badal has clarified that the ordinance on citizenship was brought as per constitutional provision and allayed concerns raised in the public sphere.

At a press conference held on Monday, Attorney General Badal said the ordinance was brought as it was necessary for the implementation of the constitution. “The ordinance has the exact thing that is in the constitution,” he said.

The Supreme Court also had ordered the government to provide entitled citizens with citizenship and to implement that order as well as to fulfill the constitutional mandate, the ordinance was brought, Badal added.

According to Badal, the number of people who have obtained citizenship on the basis of birth in Nepal is 190,726 and their children till date have not been able to get citizenship.

He also clarified that the ordinance does not include disputed issues related to citizenship.
