President issues Citizenship Ordinance

The ordinance addresses concerns of Madhes-centric parties

KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has issued the Citizenship (First Amendment) Ordinance Sunday.

The Citizenship Ordinance provisions for providing ‘citizenship by descent’ to offsprings of Nepali nationals who obtained the citizenship by birthright, according to a source. It also addresses the demands of Madesh-centric parties.

Children of Nepali nationals, who received citizenship by birth, did not receive citizenship by descent earlier.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli recommended the President to issue the Citizenship Ordinance through Cabinet decision to address the demand of Madhesh-centric parties. A Citizenship Bill had been under discussion at the parliament for the past two years.

With Saturday’s dissolution of the parliament, the citizenship-related law has come into effect through the ordinance.
