Opposition parties likely to file writ petition at SC against House dissolution today

KATHMANDU: The opposition political parties are likely to file a writ petition in the Supreme Court on Sunday against Prime Minister KP Oli’s move to dissolve the parliament.

Leaders of the opposition parties — Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Center, UML’s Madhav Kumar Nepal faction, and Upendra-Baburam faction of the Janata Samajbadi Party — are holding a meeting today to discuss the issue and their future move.

“If everything goes according to the plan, we will file the writ petition on Sunday itself,” a leader said adding, “If not today, we will do it on Monday.”

Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak said that Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda”, UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal and JSP Chairman Upendra Yadav are going to the court along with NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba to register the writ petition.

A writ has already been prepared on behalf of the 149 lawmakers who have signed to make NC President Deuba the prime minister and all of them will physically appear in court.

Lawyers including Govinda Bandi and Khamba Khati have prepared the draft of the writ petition.

In addition, signatures on the writ petition will also be collected, sources said.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari had dissolved the parliament on Saturday early morning and announced mid-term elections for November 12 and November 15 on the recommendation of the cabinet.
