By-election for vacant NA member seat scheduled for May 20

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission of Nepal has announced to hold a by-election for the vacant post in National Assembly (NA) on May 20 this year.

The by-election would elect a member in place of Ram Bahadur Thapa Magar who was released from the position of the NA member recently.

He was elected a member to the NA from Bagmati Province representing CPN (Maoist Centre).

Clause 61 of National Assembly Member Election Act-2075 BS mandates that by-election should be held within 35 days of vacancy if the term of office of NA member remains vacant for more than six months.

Commission’s spokesperson Raj Kumar Shrestha told RSS that the date for the by-election was fixed after the decision of the government and in consultation with the Commission.

The political parties have been asked to submit their application for the by-election within April 23-27. The Commission has begun preparation for the by-election with the announcement of a date for the by-election, said Shrestha.
