Ruling coalition should form a consensus for judicial reform: Dr. Baburam Bhattarai

KATHMANDU: The ruling coalition affiliated Janata Samajwadi Party’s federal council chairman Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said that the coalition should find a way out by forming a common view on the problems seen in the court and the movement of the Nepal Bar Association (SC).

Receiving NBA’s memorandum that demands the dismissal of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana, Dr. Bhattarai said that the ruling alliance should make a common opinion regarding the way out for the ongoing crisis the judiciary has been facing.

“We believe the organs of the state should resolve the crisis they face on their own; yet we feel the issues raised by NBA deserve respect. We have to form a common view of the alliance,” he said, adding, “Our view is that there should be structural reform. We will keep this in alliance. We will take the initiative in the role of political parties.”

Stating that the problem seen in the court is a structural problem, he stressed on the need to look at the root cause rather than the parts.

The Bar has been agitating for more than three weeks, accusing it of seeking political alliances with the executive.

NBA Chair Chandeshwor Shrestha, along with other officials, handed over the memorandum to Dr. Bhattarai.

Earlier on Monday, NBA had handed over a memorandum to Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota, National Assembly Chairman Ganesh Prasad Timilsina, CPN-UML Parliamentary Party Deputy Leader Subash Nembang, Chief Whip of CPN-Maoist Center Dev Gurung, and representatives of various political parties demanding impeachment of Chief Justice Rana.
