Opp’n alliance warns country poised to lose gains of people’s struggles

KATHMANDU: The opposition alliance has warned that the country stood to lose the gains of people’s struggles as the Prime Minister and the government interfered and intimidated everyone and everywhere for the sake of their vested interests.

Issuing a joint statement Tuesday, they said a conspiracy was being plotted to intimidate the independent judiciary and to control the Election Commission (EC), which is responsible for ensuring the fairness of the basis of democracy, among other state organs.

The joint statement is signed by Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur, Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, senior UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Chairman Upendra Yadav and Rastriya Janamorcha’s Vice Chairwoman Durga Poudel.

They have warned that the nation is heading towards a grave crisis and the government seemed irresponsible to manage natural disasters such as floods, landslides and drownings – the immediate crises – not to mention the coronavirus pandemic.

They draw attention to matters of public concerns such as arbitrary dissolutions of parliament, governance through ordinance, misuse of state organs and corruption, among others. They also stated that the EC had been violating the legal system, established norms and traditions in disputes related to various political parties and accused it of bias.

In order to strengthen the Federal Democratic Republic with political stability, rule of law and good governance, social justice, inclusion, national interest and prosperity of the people, the opposition alliance has committed itself to unity, bearing a sense of responsibility towards the expectations and needs of the people.

They also called on all and sundry to play their part for the protection and promotion of the supreme interest of the country and the people, constitution, democracy and rule of law.
