124 new bird species spotted at Bhanubhakta Zoological Park

TANAHUN: One hundred twenty-four new species of birds have been spotted in Bhanubhakta Zoological Park at Byas Municipality in Tanahun district in a period of one week.

The birds have been spotted during a summer bird survey from April 14-20.

With this in total, the park houses 176 bird species, said the conservation officer at the park, Rupak Maharjan. “It is a matter of encouragement to protect the wildlife that such a number of bird species has been spotted in the park that spans 425 hectares of area,” he said.

The newly spotted birds include rare steppe eagle and white-backed vulture, near threatened Himalayan vulture, local and migratory birds.

Binoculars, cameras, and a book to identify birds were used to survey the birds.

The survey was done coinciding with the 26th Wildlife Week on April 14. The park accommodates eight communities and five leasehold forests.
