Opposition parties reach Sheetal Niwas with signatures of 149 lawmakers

KATHMANDU: The opposition parties are preparing to stake a claim to form a government under the premiership of Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba.

The leaders have reached Sheetal Niwas to submit the signatures of 149 lawmakers to make NC President Deuba the Prime Minister.

Leaders including Deuba, Maoist Center Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda”, CPN- UML leader Madhav Nepal, Janata Samajbadi Party leaders Baburam Bhattarai and Upendra Yadav held discussions at the NC Parliamentary Party office in Singha Durbar earlier.

Apart from the NC and the Maoist, 27 members of the Madhav Kumar Nepal faction of the UML, and 13 members of the JSP’s Upendra-Baburam faction have signed the agreement.

The parties need 136 lawmakers to form a new government.

The President had called for providing an alternative government Thursday evening with the deadline of 5 pm Friday.

The opposition will form a majority government pursuant to Article 76 (5) of the constitution.
