Khimlal Devkota elected to National Assembly



HETAUDA: Dr. Khimlal Devkota, a candidate of the Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Center, Janata Samajbadi Party, and the Madhav Nepal faction of the CPN-UML, has been elected as a member to the National Assembly.

His opponent –candidate of the ruling CPN-UML, Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’ – lost the election to the NA held on Thursday.

Devkota has garnered 5,088 votes from a total of 338 voters. Badal received only 4,014 votes as he could not obtain votes of those voters aligning with the Madhav Kumar Nepal faction of the UML.

As many as 105 Provincial Assembly (PA) members and 233 chiefs and deputy chiefs cast their votes in the by-election today.

Devkota got 58 votes, Badal got 45 votes and Krishna Bahadur Tamang of Nepal Mazdur Kisan Party got 2 votes out of 105 members of the Bagmati Provincial Assembly.

Similarly, Devkota got 128 votes, Badal got 103 votes and Tamang got 2 votes out of 233 local level chiefs and deputy chiefs of Bagmati Pradesh.

There were a total of 348 voters, including 110 Provincial Assembly members and 238 chiefs and deputy chiefs of 119 local units from 13 districts.

For the elections of a NA member, one provincial assembly member is equivalent to 48 votes, and a chief or a deputy chief of the local units is equivalent to 18 votes. There were 5,280 votes of 110 Provincial Assembly members and 4,284 votes of 238 chiefs and deputy chiefs of local units. Hence, total votes stood at 9,564.
