KATHMANDU: Already hit by the COVID-19, as many as 88 aftershocks have occurred in the hilly district Lamjung of Gandaki Pradesh in the last 24 hours.
These tremors have been recorded until 5:51 am today since the 5.8-magnitude struck at 5:42 am Wednesday with its epicenter at Bhulbhule in Marsyangdi rural municipality of the district, according to the National Seismological Center (NSC), Lainchaur.
According to Lok Bijaya Adhikari, the chief of National Seismological Center (NSC), Lainchaur, the first 5.8-magnitude tremor occurred at 5:42 am, the second one (4-magnitude) struck at 8:16 am and the third one (4.1-magnitude) at 8:17 am the forth one (5.3-magnitude) struck at 8:26 am.
Similarly, two tremors measuring 4 and 4.5 on the Richter scale occurred at 9:23 pm and at 10:39 pm, respectively on Wednesday. Likewise, a 3.2-magnitude earthquake has occurred at 5:51 am this morning.
Six tremors above 4-magnitude and above and as many as 82 below 4-magnitude have occurred until 5:51 am today, according to the NSC.
All of the tremors were epicentered at Bhulbhule in Marsyangdi rural municipality of Lamjung district, said Adhikari.
The rain which occurred overnight has further added woes to the locals who are already hit by COVID-19. The prohibitory order is underway in the district currently due to the COVID-19. People have been ordered to stay indoors and not to crowd up.
Meanwhile, four people sustained injuries and over 200 houses have been damaged by the earthquakes.
According to DSP Ganga Thapa of District Police Office, Lamjung, four people including Uma Gurung, 36, of Besishahar municipality-6, Khaka Kumari Khadka, 83, of ward-11, Khushimaya Gurung, 29, of ward-8 and Govinda Adhikari, 22, of Marsyangdi rural municipality-6, Thulibesi, were injured.
Earlier, a 4.1-magnitude quake had occurred with its epicenter in Kavrepalanchowk on March 18.
Nepal is prone to earthquake and often witnesses quakes as it lies along the active fault zone between the two tectonic plates – the Tibetan plate and Indian plate.
