SC to hear murder case against Speaker Sapkota tomorrow

KATHMANDU: The Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court (SC) will hear a murder case against House of Representatives Speaker Agni Sapkota on Wednesday.

The case was filed by Purnimaya Lama on March 3, 2008, for his involvement in abduction and killing of her husband Arjun Lama during Maoist insurgency in 2005.

The case had been pending at the Constitutional Bench ever since it was filed. Till date, it has been rescheduled for hearing at least 19 times, however, a hearing has yet to take place.

There was an uproar among victims of Maoist insurgency and rights activists when a person (Sapkota) accused of murder was nominated to the post of Speaker at the House of Representatives in January 2020.

There were similar reservations when Sapkota was picked as Minister in 2011 and 2015.
