Attorney General Kharel announces resignation

KATHMANDU: Attorney General (AG) Agni Prasad Kharel has resigned from his post.

Sources said AG Kharel announced his resignation by organizing a press conference at his office on Friday.

Kharel had on Thursday morning met Prime Minister KP Oli at Baluwatar and submitted his resignation.

He mentioned that he resigned in accordance with Clause (A) of Article 157 (4) of the Constitution of Nepal.

Speaking at the press conference, Kharel hinted at his possibility of going into active politics with ruling CPN-UML.

He served as the AG for three years. Kharel was also a member of both the Constituent Assemblies, and is the former Chief Whip of the UML Parliamentary Party.

Also a senior advocate, Kharel was appointed the Attorney General in February 2018.

Kharel had also served as Law Minister in October 2015 when KP Oli became prime minister for the first time in September the same year.

Kharel is also likely to contest in the upcoming election from Jhapa.

Prime Minister Oli had been dissatisfied with Kharel with his debate on the issue of the dissolution of the House of Representatives (HoR) at the Supreme Court.

Kharel had argued that non-approval of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact and failure to move various bills including the bill on opening up cannabis cultivation made the government realize that the HoR did not cooperate with the government making the dissolution of HoR a must.

(We regret to inform that the correct year of Agni Kharel’s tenure as a Law Minister had to be October 2015, instead of the one that appeared earlier — Editor)
