Speaker Sapkota not fully satisfied with parliament’s performance

KATHMANDU: Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota has said he is not fully satisfied with the performance of the parliament.

Speaking at a program organized by the Legislative Management Committee of the National Assembly on Saturday, he said there was a lot of room for improvement in the functioning of the parliament. “I am not totally satisfied with the effectiveness of the parliament,” he said. “The parliament needs reform for efficiency and implementation of scientific procedures. I’m honestly focused on it.”

He said he saw a weakening democratic dynamic in the republic during his two years as Speaker. “It has been almost two years since I took over as the Speaker. I deeply felt that there is a lack of sense of responsibility and duty in everyone, resulting in weakening internal dynamics in the republic — even in the political parties,” Speaker Sapkota said.

Sapkota added democracy is not for preaching but embracing its values and bringing them in behavior.

He also said that nothing should be greater than the will of the people and the needs of the nation and he will take no decision beyond the scope the law

Similarly, Chairman of the National Assembly Ganesh Timilsina said the parliament should perform in such a manner that would be felt by the public. “We parliamentarians are more responsible for it. The way we are working at present does not guarantee us satisfaction in the test of history.”

He also said that some fundamental rights were not being implemented due to lack of governing laws.
