Parties to file nominations for NA by-lections in Lumbini Pradesh today

KATHMANDU: Political parties are filing nominations today for the by-elections of the National Assembly to be held on May 31 in Lumbini Pradesh.

The Election Commission (EC), Nepal has informed that the parties will file nominations today as per the election schedule.

Ruling CPN-UML has decided to field Chandra Bahadur Khadka as a candidate for the by-elections. The post of a NA member lay vacant after CPN (Maoist Center) took action against Khadka for defecting to the UML.

Similarly, the alliance formed by Nepali Congress, Maoist Center and Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) and Rastriya Janamorcha (RJM) has decided to field Drig Narayan Pandey in the by-elections.

Pandey had defected to Nepali Congress (NC) from CPN-UML by tendering resignation from his post of the National Assembly on May 2.

Lumbini Province NC Parliamentary Party Leader Birendra Kumar Kanaudiya said the alliance has decided to field Pandey for the NA by-elections from Lumbini Pradesh.

The final list of the candidates will be published on May 23 and the EC will also provide election symbols to final candidates on the same day.

There are a total of 296 voters including Provincial Assembly members, chiefs and deputy chiefs of local units. Of them, 79 are Provincial Assembly members while 217 are chiefs and deputy chiefs of the local units.

The EC has fixed Ghorahi Sub-metropolitan City-15 as the poling center for the by-elections.
