KATHMANDU: The number of COVID-19 infections in the age group up to 19 has been increasing in the country, according to the statistics released by the Ministry of Health and Population.

The rate of such cases is increasing as the coronavirus continues to spread, the ministry has said shedding light on the new data.

According to the ministry, 89 persons below 19 years were confirmed infected on Saturday.

Of the 843 infected people across the country, 89 are in the age group of 19 years, the ministry said.

According to the ministry’s statistics of the last five days, the infection has been confirmed in 340 people in the age group of below 19 years.

The Ministry of Health has already recommended to the Covid Crisis Management Committee (CCMC) to shut down the educational institutions saying that the new variant was spreading rapidly in Nepal.

The Ministry of Education has been requesting educational institutions to run the classes online given the increasing risk of coronavirus infection in students.

Even the Kathmandu Metropolitan City issued a notice on Friday asking all concerned to close the educational institutions that have reported coronavirus infection for a week.

In the current situation, the main reason for the emphasis to close the educational institutions is due to the high risk of infection in children, Sameer Kumar Adhikari, co-spokesperson at the Health Ministry said.

According to the ministry, schools are seen as the place where the infection spreads. Adhikari warned that the situation could be unfavorable if the schools were not closed immediately.
