Ministry forms task force to seek solutions to plight of freed Haliyas

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation has formed a study task force to seek solutions to the problems of freed Haliyas (bonded laborers).

At a meeting of parliamentary Committee for Monitoring and Evaluation of Implementation of Directive Principles, Policies and Responsibilities of the State on Friday, Minister Shashi Shrestha said a five-member task force was formed under the leadership of Shyam Shrestha. The task force includes human rights activists, including Ganesh BK, and staff from the ministry.

According to Minister Shrestha, the task force will submit a report advising solutions and alternatives to the problems faced by freed Haliyas within 15 days.

The government abolished bonded labor in 2008. However, human rights activists have been saying that Haliyas are declared free only on paper and their plight remains the same. In addition, data on the bonded laborers is also missing and the government has yet to properly manage the freed Haliyas.
