UML’s crisis began after Oli became party Chairman: Madhav Nepal

KATHMANDU: Senior leader of CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal said that it was unfortunate for the party and the communist movement to elect KP Oli as the party Chairman.

“Unfortunately, the party’s downfall began soon after Oli was elected as its Chairman,” senior leader Nepal said while addressing a national conclave of his faction in Sanepa Wednesday.

Stating that the party is undergoing a tough time, he said they are compelled to struggle against the KP Oli attitude. “Let me remind you that our struggle is to establish a system, not for posts or power. We are fighting to end anarchy, and whimsical decisions.”

Former Prime Minister Nepal further said that their struggle was not for the sake of power, but ideology. “We are prepared to excel in our struggle,” he told the gathering.

Nepal also alleged Chairman Oli of being responsible for the current crisis in the party since he nurtured factionalism in the name of the Madan Bhandari Foundation.

“Comrade Bamdev Gautam had rightly said, recently, that it was unfortunate for the party and the communist movement that PM Oli got elected the Chairman of our party,” Nepal quoted Bamdev as saying.

In fact, Oli’s election to the party Chairman was unfortunate. “The crisis in the party started as soon as KP Oli was elected as the party Chairman,” Nepal said alleging him of being a “master of prejudice and arrogance”.

He also came down heavily on PM Oli for breaching the party statute in all forms, and abusing the power by encouraging sycophants.

“PM Oli never listened to us even issues like COVID-19 pandemic, the modality of socialist movement for Nepal, among others,” he alleged.

Alleging what he called “cyber-jackals” (cyber-army formed by the KP Oli faction) for disseminating fake information, Nepal urged all party cadres to be extremely cautious.

Senior leader Nepal also said that their campaign was to take the communist movement to a new height.

“The path we have chosen is meant for constructive contribution to the unified communist movement,” he said adding, “The presence of senior leaders of various leftist movements of the past has assured us that we are heading in the right direction.”

He stated, “We have to move with proletariat’s perspective, our ways should be guided by socialist ideals, we should not be guided by whims.”

The faction is holding a two-day national conclave in Sanepa from today.

It had decided to hold the gathering against what they said “KP Oli’s arbitrary” attitude in running the party.

Likewise, the central committee of the faction is scheduled to submit a concept paper on the current interparty dispute and its possible ways out in the gathering.
