BHAIRAHAWA: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that the Election Commission (EC) should hold the elections within six months of the dissolution of the House of Representatives if it wants to do so.

He, however, raised suspicion over the EC’s lack of preparedness for the same despite Prime Minister KP Oli’s reiteration of holding the polls within the stipulated dates.

Speaking at a protest rally in Bhairahawa against the dissolution of the HoR, NC President Deuba said, “I don’t understand why the EC is yet to bring the election program?”

Deuba said that EC should categorically say that it would not hold the election if it doesn’t want to.

“In fact, the election should be held within six months of dissolving a Parliament,” he said adding, “And if PM Oli is really serious about holding the polls, the government must expedite the process.”

Stating that the EC has yet to publish the election schedule, Deuba asked, “What is barring the EC from calling the political parties and give the election program?”

Deuba also said that EC should not wait for the Supreme Court’s decision.

He also criticized the EC for failing to decide on the dispute of the Nepal Communist Party.

“There has been a dispute over the election symbol. Why is EC dillydallying in providing the election symbol to a party?” he asked.
