KATHMANDU: At a time when the country is reeling under a health crisis, employees of Nepalgunj Medical College in Kohalpur, Banke have staged a protest, stating that they haven’t been paid for the past four months.

Assembling at the administration section of the health facility Monday morning, employees demanded their regular salary and COVID risk allowance, among other benefits they were entitled to.

Kushmakhar Basyal, president of Nepal Employees’ Union of Nepalgunj Medical College, warned of launching series of demonstrations if their demands are not fulfilled.

“If the management does not fulfill our demands, including salary and allowance, by Wednesday, we will carry out a phased agitation by initiating the legal process,” he said. Basyal said they were forced to agitate as their pay was due since mid-February. However, he clarified that their protest would not affect the regular services in the hospital.

Ratna Giri, general secretary of the employees’ union, said that doctors, health workers and cleaners who worked during Covid crisis were not paid. She said employees had been facing difficulty as the management had not paied them their salaries and allowances for the past four months.
