Trump impeachment trial: President Biden warns ‘democracy is fragile’

WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden has warned his predecessor Donald Trump’s acquittal for inciting mob violence is a reminder that “democracy is fragile”, BBC has reported.

He said that the charge, relating to Trump’s role in the Capitol riot last month, was “not in dispute”, while seeking to move on from the process, the report said.

Seven Republicans have joined Democrats in voting to convict, falling short of the two-thirds majority needed to do so, it added.

Trump, meanwhile, has welcomed his acquittal, calling his impeachment a “witch hunt”.

In the Senate, the trial ended with a 57-43 vote in favor of conviction.

Trump had faced a single charge of incitement to insurrection after pro-Trump supporters stormed Congress on 6 January, BBC reported.
