13 diagnosed with new coronavirus variant in Nepal

KATHMANDU: A new variant of the coronavirus has been detected at the community level in Nepal.

According to media reports on Sunday, 13 people have been diagnosed with the new variant of the virus. Doctors fear that it would be the UK variant of the pandemic virus.

According to Director at the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division Dr. Krishna Poudel, a new type of virus was detected in a Nepali who came to Kathmandu via Pokhara after visiting Muktinath two weeks ago.

Swab samples of 12 people in Pokhara who came in contact with the man tested positive for the new virus.

Earlier, Nepal had confirmed three cases of a new coronavirus strain, which was detected in the UK late last year.

As is no laboratory in Nepal to identify the new variant of coronavirus, their genome sequencing was done in the World Health Organization’s laboratory in Hong Kong.
