NC and Maoist Center bid to form majority govt fails

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-Maoist Center’s bid to form a majority government under Article 76 (2) of the constitution has failed with the UML’s Madhav Kumar Nepal faction putting off their mass resignation.

The NC office-bearers’ meeting and Maoist Center Standing Committee meeting have also concluded.

After the meeting, NC leader Prakash Sharan Mahat said since the NC and Maoist Center could not garner a majority now Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli could claim to form a minority government under Article 76 (3).

Mahat said the NC would not be submitting a claim now since it lacked majority.

The Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) could not make a decision, Mahat added.

Maoist Spokersperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha said Maoist Center was waiting for the result of PM Oli and leader Nepal’s talk.

PM Oli and leader Nepal have decided to form a task force to restore party committees to the status of May 16, 2018 and have put on hold mass resignations.
