Misunderstanding between close neighbors sometimes is obvious: Dr Mahat

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) joint-general secretary Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, who is currently in India visit, said as Nepal and India have shared time-honored and close relations, problems between the two countries sometimes was obvious.

In his address to a program organized in the Banaras Hindu University on Sunday, he said, “Nepal and India have enjoyed century-old relations in religious, economic and cultural domains among others. Misunderstanding is obvious sometimes on some issue in such close relations”.

In the interaction organized by the Nepal Study Center and Dindayal Study Center of the University, he further noted, “Misunderstanding can also emerge in the close ties; dispute can also surface between the neighbours. Such issues should be sorted out through the medium of dialogue”.

Former Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Mahat argued that the bilateral relations between Nepal and India should be further strengthened based on mutual trust and understanding.

He claimed that it was immature and instable foreign policy of the erstwhile KP Oli-led government that resulted in widening misunderstanding between the two countries.

Dr Mahat also opined that the incumbent government would adopt a balanced and mature foreign policy with its neighbours and the global community.

University Chancellor VK Shukla had welcomed the visiting three-member Nepali delegation headed by Dr Mahat.
It may be noted that several Nepali political leaders and intellectuals had obtained their higher education from the Banaras University. “The University in this sense also was a bridge of Nepal-India relation”, Dr Mahat emphasized.

On the occasion, Chancellor of the Mahatma Gandhi University had pledged to initiate collaboration with the Tribhuvan University of Nepal.
