Govt exposed its authoritarian nature by arresting Jhakri: NC senior leader Poudel

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel has said that the government exposed its authoritarian character by arresting the leader of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Prachanda-Nepal faction Ram Kumari Jhakri.

In a statement on Thursday, Poudel said that the arrest was ‘a naked inference on the freedom of expression of the citizens guaranteed by the constitution’.

“The government has exposed its authoritarian character by marking the arrest,” Poudel said in a statement, “I and my party, the Nepali Congress, strongly condemn the arrest and demand her unconditional release.”

Police arrested Jhakri by handing over an arrest warrant under the ‘act of treason against the state’ from her Shankhamul-based residence at 1 pm today.

The arrest warrant has been handed over to her in line with Section 58 of the Treason Act.
