Nine killed in Kolkata high-rise inferno



KOLKATA: Nine people have died and two others sustained critical injuries in a fire that broke out at the top floor of the 13-storyed Eastern Railways’ New Koilaghat office on Strand Road here on Monday evening.

The deceased included four firemen, a policeman and a Railway Protection Force staffer and a railway official who were engaged in firefighting and rescue operations. Two others who died could not be identified as their bodies were charred beyond recognition.

It was learned that the deceased had taken an elevator to the 11th floor and encountered toxic fumes when they reached there. The casualties may rise, according to sources. The fire broke out at 6:10 pm on the 12th floor.
