Photo journalist Purnima feted for climbing Mt Dhaulagiri

KATHMANDU: The Photo Journalists Association, Kaski feted photo journalist Purnima Shrestha for successfully summitting Mt Dhaulagiri (8,167m).

Shrestha along with Pasang Lhamu Sherpa had ascended the seventh highest mountain in the world this week, becoming the first Nepali woman to reach atop the mountain recently.

In the program organized in Pokhara on Wednesday, Association’s Kaski Chairperson Pradeep Poudel said that Shrestha’s successful ascend of Mt Dhaulagiri had elevated the pride of all photojournalists.

Shrestha expressed her happiness for being able to scale Mt Dhaulagiri amid the financial crisis. According to her, she made it to the top of the Dhaulagiri Mountain in her second attempt.

She shared that she was eyeing to climb Mt Kanchenjunga and Mt Makalu and Lhotse, all measuring above 8,000 meters.

The feted photo journalist suggested the Gandaki Province government make a trekking trail around the base camp of Mt Dhaulagiri since, she reasoned, it would promote local tourism destinations.

Shrestha had trekked from Marpha in Mustang district to reach the base camp of Mt Dhaulagiri. There were 40 members in her expedition team.

A team of Nepali women, including Shrestha, on April 16 this year had climbed Mt Annapurna, becoming the first group of Nepali women to do so.

Shrestha had also successfully ascended the highest mountain in the world-Sagarmatha (Mt Everest), Mt Manaslu and Mt Ama Dablam.

TAAN western regional association’s first vice-president Dharma Panthi, Photo Journalist Association Gandaki Chapter Chairperson Ram Gurung among others said that Shrestha’s successful ascend of Mt Dhaulagiri had further increased the glory of photojournalists.
